Hughes joins growing list of Republican elected officials to endorse Sturtevant for Senate
Richmond -- Wendy Hughes, the Clerk of Court in Chesterfield County, has endorsed Glen Sturtevant's campaign for State Senate. Wendy has more than 20 years of experience in the legal field, and has served as the Chesterfield County Clerk of Court since her countywide election in 2014.
"I support Glen Sturtevant for State Senate because we need a new generation of strong leaders to carry forward conservative values in Richmond," said Wendy Hughes. "Glen is a conservative Republican who has a proven record of winning in a tough district. I am proud to endorse his campaign and look forward to helping him win in June and November."
"I am proud to have the support of a strong Republican leader like Wendy Hughes," said Glen Sturtevant. "She has worked hard to elect Republicans in Chesterfield County, and I am honored she is joining our campaign to win the 10th district seat and keep a Republican majority in the State Senate. Wendy is an enthusiastic Republican leader in Chesterfield County, and she understands the importance of making sure that Republicans win the 10th State Senate seat."
Wendy joins a growing list of Republican elected officials across the 10th district who have endorsed Glen Sturtevant for Senate. In recent weeks, Glen has been endorsed by Republican elected officials in Chesterfield and Powhatan including current and former Sheriffs, prosecutors, and members of the Board of Supervisors.

I am proud to announce our campaign has been endorsed by two Republican members of the Powhatan Board of Supervisors. This morning, David Williams and Barry Hodge announced their endorsements of our campaign for Virginia Senate in the 10th District, which includes all of Powhatan County and portions of Chesterfield County and Richmond City. Williams and Hodge have served on the Powhatan Board since their elections in 2011.
Speaking about his endorsement, Barry Hodge said, “I believe Glen Sturtevant is a strong conservative candidate who will defend our constitutional freedoms and protections. He will defend our property rights and keep taxes low.”
“Glen worked hard as the only Republican School Board member in Richmond to oppose wasteful spending and make sure tax dollars were spent in the classroom,” said Supervisor David Williams. "We need that type of fiscal leadership in the Senate. That is why I am proud to endorse Glen Sturtevant.”
It’s an honor to have the support of these two hard working community leaders in Powhatan. In the State Senate, I will work hand and hand with the citizens of Powhatan and the entire district to make state government more accountable to you.
Virginia’s 10th State Senate District includes all of Powhatan County, and today’s endorsements are the first in this race from any elected officials in the county. In recent weeks, we have also been honored to announce a number of major endorsements from elected officials in neighboring Chesterfield County. I look forward to making additional announcements over the next several days and weeks, and I am honored to have received such early, enthusiastic support from some of the District’s strongest conservative leaders.
I was honored to receive two additional endorsements from Chesterfield County prosecutors. Chesterfield Commonwealth’s Attorney, the Honorable William “Billy” Davenport, and Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney John Childrey jointly announced their endorsement of my campaign for State Senate.
“I am proud to support Glen Sturtevant for State Senate. Glen is a proven conservative leader who will defend the Constitution,” said Davenport. “I look forward to working with him on the important issues facing Chesterfield County, including protecting our children and families from dangerous criminals.”
“Glen Sturtevant is the conservative leader that we need in Virginia and the best candidate for Senate to represent the people of Chesterfield County,” said Childrey. "I am excited to announce my support for Glen’s campaign.”
It is an honor to have the support of Chesterfield County prosecutors and public servants like Billy Davenport and John Childrey. I will work with them to make our communities safe and to improve our quality of life in central Virginia.
This is the second set of major endorsements for our campaign from Chesterfield County. Just last week, Chesterfield Sheriff Karl Leonard and former Sheriff Dennis Proffitt announced their support for us as well. A growing number of elected leaders from across the district are coming together in support of our campaign, but we need your support as well.
Chesterfield Sheriff Karl Leonard and former Sheriff Dennis Proffitt jointly announced their public endorsement of Glen Sturtevant for State Senate in the 10th District of Virginia, which includes Chesterfield County, Powhatan County, and the City of Richmond.
“I am proud to stand with Glen Sturtevant in his campaign for State Senate,” said Sheriff Karl Leonard. “Glen represents the next generation of leadership in Richmond, and as our State Senator he will fight to keep our communities safe.”
“Glen Sturtevant has my support for State Senate because he is a proven conservative leader who understands the importance of protecting our children and families,” said former Sheriff Dennis Proffitt.
“I am honored to have the support of outstanding law enforcement professionals like Sheriffs Leonard and Proffitt,” said Glen Sturtevant. “In the Senate, I will work with law enforcement to make sure they have the necessary resources to protect our children and families throughout Virginia.”
Karl Leonard has served as Chesterfield County Sheriff since March of 2014, and has 30 years of service in law enforcement prior to becoming Sheriff. Leonard has a decorated military career with multiple deployments including Operation Desert Storm, Hurricane Katrina Response, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Dennis Proffitt served as the Sheriff of Chesterfield County from 2007 to 2014. His service to Chesterfield County includes a 43-year career in law enforcement.
Chesterfield County accounts for roughly half of the registered voters in the 10th Senate District of Virginia. Today’s announced endorsements from Chesterfield Sheriffs Leonard and Proffitt are the first from any elected official in the district. Additional announcements will be made in the coming days and weeks.

As a concerned parent, Glen got involved in his local schools to make them better. He eventually ran for School Board on an education reform agenda and was overwhelmingly elected by the voters. On the School Board, Glen has focused on commonsense reforms to our education system, including making sure taxpayer dollars are spent in the classroom instead of on bureaucracy, increased transparency in spending, zero-based budgeting, and eliminating waste and abuse.
